three workshops: “disaster movies for Improv”december 4, 11 and 18

“Good morning darling.” "Why are you awake so early? I thought you had today off.” “Well, Harry is sick, so today I'm flying the Tropical Airways 737 to Los Angeles. But tomorrow I'll be back to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. I love you.”

What a nice fundament for a disaster movie. But there is more: it is also the fundament for a totally improvised stage version of a disaster movie!

Mondays december 4, 11 and 18 Formerly Known Improv will host a series of three workshops about this nice format. In these workshops the first 45 minutes we will take a look at energizers and general improv skills that are needed for his format. The main part of the workshop we will explore how disaster movies work.

It’s a four chapter format:

Platform and first signs of disaster
The shit hits the fan
The big adventure
Solution, life as it is after

But the story will not only be about the disaster and the saving of lives. There is always a second story along the timeline. A love story, a family tragedy/reunion, stuff like that. And towards the end of the story the two story lines will mingle! 

What a fantastic format!

The workshops will be Monday nights from 7:30 till 10 PM in the Polanentheater. A nice handout is included. The fee is € 12 per workshop, but you can get a discount if you sign in for all three workshops: then you won’t pay € 36, but only € 30. How nice is that!

We often say to inexperienced improvisers “don't ask questions”. But that rule is not a straitjacket - especially for experienced actors.
There are bad questions, such as “Where are we going?”, which often place the responsibility for the progression of the story on your scene partner. But there are also questions that are actually an offer to play, an invitation to the other person to take the next step, such as “Don’t you love me anymore?” And the art of not answering a question is also a beautiful instrument in a scene. Season opening 2023 - 2024

This Monday, September 4, we will start our 2023-2024 season of improv workshops at the Polanentheater.

We will take a look at general skills for all levels. We will explore improvised whodunits. We will play hilarious news bulletins. We will have fun with some refurbished theatresports games and much more!

Even though our fees will remain low (lower than common fees) we will have to raise the fee to € 12 per 2 hr 30 min workshop. Most workshops in the Amsterdam World Of Improv are around € 15 for just 1 hr 45 mins. If this price is a problem for you, feel free to contact us, and we will see what we can do for you.

This Monday, April 17, we will take a look at making clear who we are in scenes. Making clear who someone is (occupation, family relationship, social connection) is a joint responsibility. You yourself have the task of creating some clarity, your scene partner must properly register the hints given. There are two possibilities: you give yourself a character, or your opponent paints you into a character. We have nice exercises in store to deepen us into this. Plus: there is more. zoomprov workshop: “recognize the offer!” november 12

By special request this Friday’s Zoom workshop will be about recognizing offers. Your scene partner can help you to bring your story forward by endowing you and by giving you a nice piece of imput. The trick is, to recognize this. Therefor it is important that if a player gives an offer, he of she must be very clear about that: the player who recieves it, then has a very easy life. Brief talking and active listening are great tools for this, so that is what we are going to practise. You will find out how that brings your scene forward!

This Friday’s workshop is called “The Big Five”. It is important to make clear five important things to yourself, your scene partners and the audience: Who are we, what is going on? Just answer five questions, and your scene will keep going in a fantastic way! We will also take another look at ways to make small mishaps bigger and bigger. And there are more surprises in the box!

  workshop “so long, farewell!” may 17

During the strictest pandemic restrictions we have organized a series of text-based improv workshops for people who are fed-up with all this Zoom and Teams day after day. We started this series in December 2020. Since the lockdown measures are loosened, Formerly Known Improv hopes to go back to Real Life workshops in the Amsterdam Polanentheater in the foreseeable future.

This Monday, May 17, will be the last text-based workshop of a series of about twenty editions. Let’s make it a reunion! Everybody who joined some of these text-based workshops is warmly invited.

We will have lots of fun with greatest evergreens, like the hilarious book titles, stupid movie titles, funny six words pictures and perhaps even a final edition of “los translacionnes”.

As long as the lockdown takes, there will be Text Based Virtual Web Based Improv Things every Monday at 8 pm.

This Monday’s workshop is called “Be brief, because if you are not brief you become a steam roller that will never give way for other players to do or say something and the audience might fall asleep and will no longer notice your tons of brilliant ideas so, ow, sorry, this is what happens when you use too much text”. Last week we found out that some people find it hard to just reply on the last thing they heard and just to add one thing to that, and not six. This is not as hard as it seems, but it needs a lot of practicing.

Also we will do a hilarious reprise about the great pictures that will inspire you to a short story.

We will explore the framework of this kind of stories, explore character work, see how locations can bring your story forward and much more.

The workshops will be around 50% about general skills, and 50% about RomCom. What a great opportunity! In the general skills part this workshop we will take a look at showing emotions, rising status and a format that is The Meaning Of Life. It’s about narrative and making connections. In the RomCom part we will take another look at making the love-to-be impossible and connecting scenes with each other.

How do we make clear what is going on in a scene? Or in a longer story? What is the relationship between people? What do they think of each other? And where are they? What are they doing?
There are two ways to make this clear this: what people hear (simplified: the narrative) and what people see (the miming of objects and activities and things like body language).
This Monday we will combine these two routes to clarity. A workshop about miming and about the narrative aspects of scenes. This is going to be very interesting. And as always we will provide leaning as well as having a lot of fun!

We are planning to restart our workshops in the Polanentheater on June 8.

We have decided some safety rules:

The maximum number of participants per workshop will be seven. Reservation is compulsory.
We do our very best to keep 1,5 meter distance to each other.
We wash our hands before the workshop and there is hand cleaning liquid available.
No shouting, no singing.
Everybody has his own chair, puts his coat on it and his bag underneath it. Need a chair in a scene? This chair!
No hugs et cetera.

  workshop “props and places” nov 4

We, improvisers, usually do not use props or furniture (only some chairs or blocks). To this, there are pros and cons. The cons are that you must be very clear in how to create objects and locations, because if you don’t, your fellow improvisers nor the audience will know what you are doing and holding and how your location is organized. The pros, however, are great. The budget is never a problem. You can wear the king’s crown, wreck a space ship, ruin an original Rembrandt painting. Unlimited possibilities!

There are many nice tricks to be clear in miming objects and creating locations. Exercises and scenes will make you think and laugh. Promise!

Two weeks ago we took a look at how time jumps can improve your skills in creating stories. It made you think about how stories develop, how they are built. We had lots of fun and we learned a lot: what a great reason to come up with a sequel!

We will take the fine art of time jumps to a next level. One of the exercises or games we will do, is in my opinion The Mother Of All Time Jumps! And don’t worry if you missed the first edition: we will begin with a wrap-up of what we did back then… Yeah, time jump to the max!

Last weeks we looked at endowing, and in the beginning of September we took care of some of the very important basic skills of improv. This Monday will be the ideal date for some time travelling. This will learn us something about how to keep things simple and how to build stories that you and your scene partners will handle with care. But most of all: it’s gonna be lots of fun!

Time jumps. Not very easy, but very rewarding and funny. So come and find out! Last Monday we took a look at ways to endow and be endowed. It is a skill you can never have practiced too much! So this week we will continue endowing. More exercises, more games. And there is more: a special way to begin and a special way to end the workshop.

At the beginning of the workshop at our mental warming-up we will be The Heroes Of The Rectangular Table, and at the end of the workshop we will do something that is inspired by the solo story we have seen last week. Due to special requests, there will be an extra improvised comedy workshop on Thursday, September 19.

It will be a two hour crash course about the basics of improv, specially designed for people who have no or just little improv experience. The goal of the workshop is to give people a first taste of improv: some funny exercises, some tips & tricks and most of all a lot of laughs in a safe environment.
